Construction of the Newton Family Apartments, a 52-unit affordable housing complex, is nearing completion in Canton's Shorb neighborhood. The building replaces the former Canton Inn, a site that had been associated with neighborhood crime concerns. Canton For All People led the project with development partner Woda Cooper Companies and received city support. Final interior work is underway, with completion expected by the end of February and leasing planned for the spring.
Project details:
- The complex contains 52 units in total: 28 three-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units and four one-bedroom units; most units are two- or three-bedroom and designed with families in mind.
- Apartments include large windows, kitchens with appliances, ceiling fans and spacious living areas; the first floor will house Canton For All People offices, a community room and a fitness center, and there is an outdoor playground.
- Rents are reported to range from $350 to $1,050 per month.
- The total project cost is $21 million and was financed with 4% low-income housing tax credits plus private and public loans and grants; the city contributed $2.1 million, including $840,000 in HOME funds and $1.26 million from American Rescue Plan funds.
- Site work began after the Canton Community Improvement Corp. purchased the parcels in July 2022; the city paid for asbestos abatement and demolition before transferring the site to Canton For All People, and construction began about a year ago.
- The apartments are part of a broader Shorb neighborhood revitalization tied to a 2021 10-year plan that has included rehabs, new houses, the Shorb Market and planned additional housing and community services.
Summary:
The Newton Family Apartments convert a formerly troubled site into affordable family housing and form one component of a multi-year revitalization of the Shorb neighborhood. Final finishing work is under way and leasing is scheduled to begin in the spring, allowing residents to move in after completion at the end of February.
