Content
The Coat of Hopes has begun a five-week journey across the Isle of Wight and is appearing at towns and village events. The textile was made from more than 700 patches created by community groups and was originally produced for the COP26 climate conference in 2021. It reached a milestone of 2,000 miles of travel on its way to the island. The tour has taken the Coat to local venues and services and will remain on the Isle of Wight until Monday 16 March.
Key details:
- The Coat comprises more than 700 patches made by community groups across the UK and was created for COP26 in 2021.
- The project passed 2,000 miles travelled on its journey to the Isle of Wight.
- One patch from St Helen's Eco Church features an image of the Isle of Wight and a white-tailed eagle.
- Local walks began with a route from Department in Ryde to St Helens, followed by walks from St Helens to Newchurch and Newchurch to Newport Minster.
- Heavy rain caused a planned walk around the green in St Helens to be cancelled; instead people gathered at the Community Centre to view and wear the Coat, sew new patches, carry out repair work, participate in children's activities, and attend a Service of Hope.
- The Coat is scheduled to remain at Independent Arts in Newport High Street until Monday 23 February, with further planned walks on 28 February, 7 March and 15 March, and will stay on the island until 16 March; the article notes an email contact and the website www.coatofhopes.uk for event details.
Summary:
The Coat of Hopes continues to travel between Isle of Wight communities and has been included in local events and services. It has attracted visitors, involved patch sewing and repair activities, and adapted plans when weather intervened. The tour will follow the listed schedule through mid-March as it moves between towns and villages.
