A large new community has been built on land that once held the Newport Llanwern Steelworks. The former 600-acre steelworks operated from 1962 until its closure in 2001 and was mostly demolished by 2004. Over the past two decades the Glan Llyn redevelopment has turned the brownfield site into housing, school and business space. Construction continues as further homes and infrastructure are planned.
Key developments:
- About 1,330 homes, a district centre, Glan Llyn Primary School and the west lake have been completed so far.
- A business park with a number of employment units, including a presence from Amazon, has been established on the site.
- The redevelopment covers the former 600-acre Llanwern Steelworks, which closed in 2001 and whose furnaces were demolished in 2004.
- The wider Glan Llyn plan is a £1bn programme that envisions up to 4,000 homes, schools, a police station, pub/restaurant, supermarket, community centre, open spaces, new lakes and access roads, a GP surgery, and health and leisure facilities.
- Around 3,000 more homes and additional infrastructure, including another primary school and a railway station, are yet to be developed.
Summary:
The former Llanwern Steelworks site has been transformed from an industrial brownfield into a growing mixed-use community with housing, a school and business space already in place. The Glan Llyn programme is scheduled to continue through plans that aim to complete the broader redevelopment by spring 2028, with further homes and facilities still to be built.
